AR STORYTELLING ON BOATS
THE ODYSSEY: AR STORYTELLING ON BOATS
Maritime AR: The Odyssey was a 3 month design foundations industrial research project, funded by InnovateUK, a collaboration between Immersive StoryLab, Meyouandus, LJMU and Maritime Industry stakeholders. It resulted in the development of a new Augmented Reality system and platform aimed at passengers on cruise ships and boats.
The location triggered content can be viewed in a number of ways, through mobile devices, on board portholes and special customised viewers that connect people to the stories and the facts about their surroundings.
The concept is to allow stories to be told about our seas, and about new destinations, for ferry or cruise passengers. Imagine taking a ferry or cruise and seeing the past coming alive around you: viking battles in the Irish Sea, the statue of a lost civilisation, the Titanic hitting an Iceberg. Or imagine if you could glimpse real sea creatures, a shark, a whale, or even creatures from mythology, a kraken bursting out of the sea. Imagine being able to connect to the stories of famous landmarks as you drift into port. Or you might participate in augmented games, stories and shared adventures that help you pass the time and connect you to the sea journey and the people around you. Storyworld immersive experiences on boats represent a new opportunity to connect passengers to the places they want to visit onshore, to media content and advertising, as well as the vast and exciting expanse of water on which they are travelling – the oceans.
